- The Jyotirling established in the Mahakal temple is south facing. The idols of Mother Parvati, Lord Ganesha and Kartikeya are installed in the sanctum sanctorum of the temple. Apart from this, there is a Nanda lamp installed in the sanctum sanctorum, which always keeps on burning. The statue of Nandi is installed in the huge room right in front of the sanctum sanctorum.


According to religious belief, there is only one king of Ujjain whose name is Mahakal Baba. It is said that during the reign of Vikramaditya, no king used to stay here at night. It is said that at that time the king who dared to stay here died after being surrounded from all sides.
